Student can choose a major, minor, or certificate from the African American Studies department.
Major
The major in African American Studies provides students with a transdisciplinary perspective on the origin, role, and policy implications of race on United States and world politics, economy, society and culture over time. Students choosing the major will learn diverse concepts, theories and methodologies for analyzing the experiences, perspectives, cultural and intellectual production of African Americans and African descended people.
Minor
The minor in African American Studies is premised on Interdisciplinarity, the centrality of Black women and gender, the use of the Global African Disapora as a framework and an emphasis on black agency and the self-determining activity of African peoples.
Certificate in Black Women and Gender Studies
This certificate situates the study of Black women and gender centrally in the analysis of the African American experience, and does so from diverse disciplinary perspectives.
